As a girl, I was seduced by the written word.

Prone on a shabby quilt on my bedroom floor I traveled to another place and time to gather round the fire with the March sisters.  Seated on a cinder block wall beside a stucco track home on a Southern California day I sought sanctuary in an attic in Connecticut with Meg and Charles Wallace on a dark and stormy night.

It was just a matter of time before I sharpened a # 2 pencil to stare down a blank pad of yellow legal paper.

As a woman, the written word lures me into promiscuous reading.

A marriage ends but, the Vampire Louis is granting an interview. Floating in a houseboat in Northern California I inhabit New York and fall in love with Sammy Clay’s voice. Turbulence hits over the Gulf of Mexico, triggering white knuckled fear but, Stephanie Plum and Lula taser another skip in New Jersey and I grin and turn the page. The bath water cools as I follow Shadow down a desolate road in search of American Gods. In a parking space in front of Chuck E. Cheese I am present as Colonel Aureliano Buendia discovers ice. Water boils on the stove but, I cannot turn away from Hana playing hopscotch in the dark. In a packed doctor’s waiting room, I hand in the clipboard and Sookie Stackhouse picks up an order for table six. Like a child who rages against bedtime I resist turning out the light: Jack Reacher has arrived….and we all know what that means.

I am compelled to fill a blank screen with words. But not just any words; words of my choosing, words that sing to me, words to reconsider, words that propel me to another place, another time, another character, another conflict.

You’ll find peppermint tea on the counter. There’s mulled wine on the stove and rugala to die for. Help yourself.

Examine the bookshelves and you’ll find your favorites. Perhaps something new will entice you.
